Category: Childrens

Here is my final post for this month, and once again, it’s a children’s record from the Golden Books division of A. A. Records

Record title: Bozo the Clown, narrated by Larry Harmon

Label: Golden Records division of A.A. Records

Catalogue Number 00212

Category: Childrens record

Story by Carl Buettner

Illustrations by Charles Satterfield

Original book published in 1961 by Western Publishing Company, in association with Capitol Records

One of two Celebrity book and Record sets in my collection, the other being Danny Kaye narrating the story of “The Musicians of Bremen” (I also had Soupy Sales narrating a Wonder Book of “Silly Sidney”, but I haven’t been able to find the book (the original cassette has been long gone from my collection))

Poor Bozo is dragooned into being a lion tamer, with Butchie Boy being in disguise as a lion, but a switch finds the clown face to face with a real lion, resulting in “Who’s training whom?”

This LP is probably also notable as being the first LP to be released by the (by 1984 corporatized) Australian Broadcasting Corporation (prior to this, the ABC was a broadcasting commission)

this was not the only release for Godiego in Australia.  Concurrent to this release, the ABC also released the opening title music and the series 1 closing theme “Ghandara” as a 45 RPM single.

the label for this release appears below:

(this post took a little longer than I anticipated) ;)

J&B’s Kids Name Record Series

Now, here is tonight’s record from J&B.

The following 45 RPM EP was given to me on my 14th birthday, but this release was more for a (much) younger demographic

Title: Kid’s Name Record - Bruce

A Kids Name Record release through J&B records.

Catalogue Number JB 5100

Side 1:

A Special Song for Bruce

A Spelling Song

Bruce, Bruce

Side 2

Bruce’s Party

Happy Birthday

For You’re a Jolly Good Fellow

© 1979, J&B Records

This was one of a series of EP’s released by J&B (about 200 titles released) which had songs, each had either a boy’s or girl’s name in all the songs

Oddly enough, I have a feeling the records were made for J&B by the custom record manufacturing divisions of either EMI, Festival or CBS.

Sadly we will never know

Goofy and ‘The Mouse Factory’

Now, a Disney rarity from the vaults:

Title: Goofy and “The Mouse Factory”

A Disneyland “Four Songs” little long play record

Catalogue Number: FS 923

A highlights package from the Disneyland LP “Goofy’s TV Spectacular”

Starring Pinto Colvig as Goofy and Jimmy MacDonald as Chip n’ Dale

Side 1:

Goofy and his Laughs

Chip n’ Dale Medley: Chip ‘n Dale, Polly Wolly Doodle, Daisy Daisy

Side 2:

Mouse Square Dance

Goofy and his Crazy Clarinets

this “Little Long Playing Record” is a repackage of four tracks from the (circa) 1964 Disneyland LP “Goofy’s TV Spectacular” with a slight tie-in to Disney’s (then) new anthology series “The Mouse Factory” (this record was released in 1972, Around the same time “The Mouse Factory” was on TV)

This stars Pinto Colvig (Goofy’s original voice) in one of the few rare recordings he did for the Disneyland label.

I can only assume that the sped up voices for Chip n’ Dale was Jimmy MacDonald.  Can someone clarify this for me (click on the ‘Read More’ link at the bottom of the post and leave a message at the bottom of the post.  Thanks.)

And now, the final post for this month brings us a TV show theme from the mid 1980’s

Title: Super Gran theme – Billy Connolly

Label: Festival/Stiff Records

Catalogue Number: K 9647 (Festival) and BUY 218 (Stiff)

Category: TV Theme

Side 1: Super Gran Theme

Side 1 Credits: Produced by Phil Coulter, Remixed by Bob Andrews

Side 2: Yootha’s Song

Side 2 Credits: Produced by Billy Connolly, Recorded by Stephen Street at The Fallout Shelter

Now this one is a bit of a rarity – the Big Yin singing the theme to a kid’s show

This was one of the few shows that ITV affiliate Tyne Tees had produced that had been sold internationally (in Australia, it was part of the Nine Network’s afternoon childrens program “C’mon Kids” (it used to air on Monday’s show)

the following link (from Wikipedia) will explain the story behind the series

According to the back cover Festival released this as a ‘limited edition’ release.

Here is the back cover art:

Here’s my first LP cover entry for Summit

Side 1

The Legend of Batman and Robin

Side 2

The Penguin’s Plunder

The Joker’s Revenge

This release is (as far as I know) the first licensed record of the caped crusader from around 1966 or 1967.  Less than a decade later, Peter Pan would release a number of records under the Power Records label.

One thing that gets me is the front cover art (green faces!   What was MGM thinking at this time?)

The LP features Jackson Beck as the narrator (and if memory serves me right, he was also the narrator for Filmation’s “New Adventures of Superman” around this time.)

Incidentally, I have added the label for Summit’s Flair series here.

here is another rarity from the HB record label:

LP: The Reluctant Dragon starring Touche’ Turtle and Dum-Dum

Label: Hanna-Barbera Records, catalogue Number HLP 2029

Re-released as DRUM 8217 by EMI in 1977

Starring Bill Thompson as Touche’ Turtle and Daws Butler (?) as Dum-Dum

Side 1:

Part 1 including songs “Touche’” and “Dum-Dum”

Side 2:

Part 2 including songs “I’m Reluctant”, “It’s a Great Day” and “Smokey the Dragon”

Kenneth Grahame’s tale of “The Reluctant Dragon” given the Hanna-Barbera treatment, starring the voice talents of Bill Thompson as Touche’.

The voice of Dum-Dum is certainly not performed by his original voice, Alan Reed, so I’m taking a stab and thinking it’s probably Daws. (anyone who can confirm or correct my assumption can post a message (no spam please, as it will be automatically deleted)  in the comments section.)

Mighty Mouse to the rescue!

I was originally going to post this a few weeks ago, but I couldn’t find the record until this last weekend (and on top of that, I had temporarily lost my internet connection.  it would have been intended to promote the Paramount DVD release “Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures – the complete series”)

Mighty Mouse to the Rescue (originally released as Mighty Mouse Playhouse)

LP: Mighty Mouse to the Rescue

Label: Metro/Leo the Lion records (re-released by PolyGram in 1975)

Catalogue Number: 2964 046

originally released as: Mighty Mouse Playhouse, Unknown catalogue nunber

Written and Narrated by Tom Morrison, the TV and Cartoon voice of Mighty Mouse

Music by Phillip Scheib

Musical Director: Bill Simon

Produced by Arthur Pine

Side 1

The Green Line

A Date for Dinner

The Watchdog

Side 2

The Sultan’s Birthday Party

Smokey Joe

The Angry Volcano

TerryToons resident story man (and voice of Mighty Mouse) Tom Morrison narrates six adaptations of Terrytoon cartoons (4 Mighty Mouse and two one shots)

the LP I have is a 1975 re-release.  I am not sure whether this record was released under it’s original title of “Mighty Mouse Playhouse” in Australia.  If it was, then EMI would have released this (If this was then please e-mail me the details (visit the “contact” page for the details)).

Bugs Bunny – Get that Pet!

A Peter Pan Narrated Book and Record

Category: Childrens/Licensed Characters

Starring Mel Blanc as Bugs Bunny, Tweety, Sylvester and “Granny”

Illustrations by George C. Peed

Catalogue Number 1972

Released: 1973

Once again into the archive, and today I am bringing out a rarity from the Peter Pan catalogue.

the company was famous for releasing many cartoon characters (Hanna-Barbera’s “the Flintstones” and Yogi Bear, King Features’ Popeye and others) on record (and in this case, on book and record).

It was around this time that the company got hold of the Looney Tunes license from Warner Bros (and also getting the services of Mel Blanc in the bargain)

the big drawback for this though is there wasn’t enough of a budget left for a full orchestral accompaniment, just a tinny electronic organ.

Mel would perform many of the Looney Tune characters for this and a 12′ book and record (including character he never originally voiced).  On this record, he also had to do the voice of “Granny” (even though it was obvious that Granny’s original voice talent was Bea Benederet, and June Foray (her current voice)

here’s the setup:

Granny, finally fed up with the cat and the canary’s shenanigans, decides to get a new pet.

Bugs turns up at Granny’s, and with the old saying “Two’s Company, Three’s A Crowd” ringing in their ears, Tweety and Sylvester plot to oust the rabbit, usually the plan backfires…

Usually with the hapless puddy on the receiving end of Granny’s broom

After nearly bringing down the house, Bugs leaves, deciding that being a pet is too noisy.  Things get back to normal… with the usual results…

In case anyone is wondering how Mel did Granny, if you recall the Flintstones episode where Barney is dressed up as an old lady, that would give you a fair idea.

Hanna-Barbera compilation #1

For the history of HB Records in Australia, go here

HB 4 in One

Record Label: Hanna-Barbera Records

EMI Catalogue Number:

Original Catalogue Numbers: HLP 2023 (I have no info on the other two LP’s) (e-mail me to give me the info, ta.)

Category: Childrens/Licensed Characters

Voice Cast:

Daws Butler as Yogi

June Foray (?) as Boo-Boo

Paul Frees as Huckleberry Hound

Unknown vocals as Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm

This LP is an odd duck as this is an abridged highlights and songs release

Side one contains an abridged version of the HB releases mentioned (“Jack and the Beanstalk” and “Little Red Riding Hood”) while side 2 has a short segment from Huck’s LP on Uncle Remus and all of the songs from “Lollypop”)

This is not the first LP in the series to get this treatment, EMI also released a musical highlights package of “The First Family on the Moon”, “James Bomb”, a shortened version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (starring Jonny Quest) and a fourth title.  I originally had this on cassette, but no longer have it.

This is the last post that was previously on the “Off the Record” blog (except for one post, which will appear on Christmas Day)

I had started to work on another record just prior to moving house (but never finished).  This post will appear in the next couple of days.
